Here is a fun fact, according to Wikipedia the
name Prelude was first used by Toyota and later given to Honda. The Honda
Prelude was a two-door sports car produced for two decades ending in the early
2000s with the fifth generation. The first through forth generations were
non-transponder keyed ignitions. Using Honda Type 1A Keyed Ignition Systems,
the fifth generation Prelude produced from 1997-2001 was among the first cars
in the US to use anti-theft transponder technology. The last Preludes made used
transponder keys (Ilco part number HD106-PT), which was embedded with the
Megamos (13) Fixed Code chip. Because
the last two generations of Honda Preludes had the same keyway, the forth
generation (1991-1996) non transponder ignition and door key (Ilco part number
HD103) was the service key for the fifth generation. Additional keys can be
programmed for the 1997-2001 Prelude with a diagnostic of coning tool. When a diagnostic
tool is used all existing keys must be present during the programming
procedure. Working keys not present will be erased from memory and will not
start the vehicle after the programming procedure. They can be added later if
desired. According to the Advanced Diagnostic website, if all keys are lost the
immobilizer must be reflashed or replaced. A standard key machine can be used
to cut all Honda Prelude keys. The key code series is 3001-8442.
