Although the Toyota Land Cruiser has been in production from 1951 until the present, it had its genesis a decade earlier. The Japanese Army discovered an American Jeep in the Philippines. The Jeep was shipped to Japan and disassembled. The Land Cruiser is the result of Japanese reverse engineering.
After Toyota stopped exporting the Crown into the States in the early 1960’s due to poor sales, the Land Cruiser was the only Japanese vehicle in the country. After some tweaking, the Crown returned to the States until it was pulled for good in the early 1970’s.
The Land Cruiser has been in continuous production longer than any other Toyota vehicle.
